What is a magnetic fastener?
A magnetic fastener is a type of fastening mechanism that uses the power of magnets to securely join or hold objects together. It consists of one or more magnets encased in a protective material, often with a specific shape of design to enhance its functionality. Magnetic fasteners are commonly used as an alternative to traditional mechanical fasteners like screws bolts or clips.
This sketch created by finite element software shows the difference between a piece of raw magnet and a flat pot magnet (one typical type of magnetic fastener) in their field strength. On the right side, the magnetic energy of the raw magnet inside is concentrated by the metal pot outside and the red color means high energy area. Obviously, the density of magnetic lines around the red area is much higher ( which is a symbol of high energy). This basically explains why magnetic fasteners can produce high enough force for fastening.
Magnetic fasteners rely on the attraction between the magnet and a ferromagnetic material to create a strong and reliable bond. When the holding face of the magnetic fastener comes into contact with the ferromagnetic surface, it generates a magnetic field that holds the two objects together. This can provide a quick and convenient way to fasten items without the need for tools or complex installation processes

Magnetic fasteners come in various forms, such as Pot magnets, Hook magnets etc, where, in between, Rubber coated magnets are considered a group of new generation products due to their even smarter construction that does not leave any scratch on delicate surfaces and offers higher force in horizontal directions. These fastening magnets satisfy applications in a wide range of industries, including manufacturing, construction, automotive, DIY and more. However, it is important to know that magnetic fasteners require an iron or ferromagnetic surface to work effectively, which can be a limitation when compared to other fasteners that can be used in a broader variety of materials.
