Overview of Pull Force
For most people, the basic understanding of permanent magnets centers around the attractive and repulsive forces between magnetic poles, as well as the interactions between magnetic fields and ferromagnetic materials. Pull force is a fundamental concept in the realm of permanent magnetic systems. It is also known as attractive force, holding force, adhesive force, clamping force, or breakaway force.
Pull force quantifies the strength with which a magnetic system—like bare permanent magnets, magnetic assemblies, or magnetic tools—can attract and hold ferromagnetic materials, such as iron or steel, or another permanent magnet. More technically, pull force is the force acting perpendicular to the contact surface, responsible for pulling the magnetic system toward another surface. It represents the maximum holding strength in direct contact (under ideal conditions like thick, smooth steel) and is often used to determine how much weight a magnetic system can support without detachment.
