As known to everyone, magnets can attract irons. But do you know whether magnets can attract aluminum?

Aluminum, a widely used metal in various industries, often sparks curiosity regarding its magnetic properties. Let’s delve into the magnetic nature of aluminum, its characteristics, and whether it is prone to rusting.

1. Is Aluminum Magnetic?

Contrary to popular belief, aluminum is not inherently magnetic. Unlike iron, nickel, or cobalt, aluminum does not possess strong magnetic properties. This is because aluminum lacks unpaired electrons in its atomic structure, which are necessary for generating a magnetic field. Therefore, when placed near a magnet, aluminum is not attracted to it.

But, a magnet moving back and forth near aluminum will generate a current inside the aluminum to form a loop. The current will generate a magnetic field, so the aluminum can be seen moving. Its low density, approximately one-third that of steel, renders it advantageous for applications where weight is a critical factor, such as aircraft construction. Moreover, aluminum’s high thermal and electrical conductivity make it invaluable in manufacturing electrical transmission lines and heat sinks for electronic devices.

3. Does Aluminum Rust?

Despite its corrosion resistance, aluminum does not rust like iron. When exposed to oxygen, it forms a thin layer of oxide on its surface, known as passivation, which acts as a protective barrier against further oxidation and corrosion. However, under certain conditions, such as exposure to acidic or alkaline environments, aluminum may still undergo corrosion, albeit at a much slower rate than iron.

At room temperature, aluminum reacts with oxygen in the air, producing a dense layer of aluminum oxide just one-thousandth of a millimeter thick. This oxide layer is exceptionally hard and resistant to wear, adhering tightly to the aluminum surface and preventing further contact with air, thus inhibiting corrosion. However, aluminum oxide can be compromised by alkalis and acids, leading to chemical reactions and the formation of compounds that weaken the protective layer. Therefore, it’s crucial to avoid exposing aluminum products to acidic or alkaline substances to preserve this protective barrier. For example, storing acidic foods or beverages in aluminum containers should be avoided. Additionally, while it may be tempting to remove surface dullness from aluminum pots with sand, doing so removes the protective oxide layer, accelerating oxidation and reducing the pot’s lifespan. Hence, it’s essential to refrain from scrubbing off the aluminum oxide layer when cleaning aluminum products.
